Sinus Surgery

What is Sinusitis?

Sinuses are hollow spaces within the bones surrounding the nose. These are cavity-filled structures within the bones, referred to as sinus cavities. There are four sinus regions in our face, including the maxillary (cheek) sinuses, frontal (forehead) sinuses, ethmoid sinuses between the eyes, and the sphenoid sinuses at the base of the skull.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

Symptoms of sinusitis vary from person to person, often presenting as pain in the head or face. However, pain is not a prominent indicator of sinusitis; it is generally of low intensity. Common and prevalent symptoms of sinusitis include nasal congestion, altered voice, a feeling of fullness in the facial region, and drainage from the nose and throat. Chronic sinusitis may manifest as persistent nasal congestion, facial fullness, snoring, coughing, reduced sense of smell, and sometimes a burning sensation in the throat. Approximately 90% of chronic sinusitis cases can be improved with proper medical treatment, but the remaining 10% may require surgical intervention.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Sinusitis

Symptoms of sinusitis include those mentioned above. A definitive diagnosis for patients with such complaints can be easily made through methods like endoscopic examination and sinus tomography. Acute sinusitis can be effectively treated with medical approaches; however, if chronic sinusitis does not respond to medication, surgery becomes a viable option.
