Concha Surgery

What is Sinusitis?

What Are Nasal Turbinates? Nasal turbinates (Concha) are structures within the nose, specifically six in total: three on the lower, middle, and upper parts of the nasal cavity. The lower turbinates regulate the temperature, humidity, and turbulence of the inhaled air. If they grow excessively, it can cause nasal congestion, and if they shrink too much, it can result in dryness in the nose.

Reduction of Nasal Turbinates, particularly referring to the reduction of the lower nasal turbinate, is a surgical procedure performed by specialized physicians that patients with difficulty breathing often seek. Nasal turbinate is commonly used in everyday language and is also known as concha. Nasal turbinates play a crucial role in heating and humidifying the air during inhalation and exhalation. Reduction of nasal turbinates is a surgery frequently conducted by expert physicians.

Symptoms of Nasal Turbinate Enlargement

Nasal turbinates are found in three regions of the nose: the lower, middle, and upper sections. These soft tissue and bone structures may enlarge due to medication use, allergic reactions, infections, or environmental factors, making it difficult for individuals to breathe comfortably.

Nasal turbinate enlargement is a common cause of nasal congestion. Middle nasal turbinates, when not causing nasal obstruction, may lead to recurring sinusitis by narrowing the openings of the sinuses.

Methods for Nasal Turbinate Reduction

There are primarily two practical treatment approaches, with Radiofrequency being the most commonly used. Radiofrequency is an intervention that provides heat energy to shrink the tissue inside. This procedure can be performed even in a clinic under local anesthesia. However, it may not be suitable for every patient. In some cases, the bony part inside the nasal turbinate may be excessive, requiring its removal. This circumstance emphasizes the consideration of a surgical intervention.
