Adenoidectomy and Tonsillectomy
Tonsillectomy
Tonsils are located in the throat and are composed of lymphoid tissue. They act as the primary defense against microbes encountered during respiration, making them a crucial part of the immune system. The decision to undergo tonsillectomy may raise concerns due to the pivotal role they play. When evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of tonsillectomy, we can categorize the criteria into definite and relative factors.
Definite criteria for tonsillectomy include severe conditions such as tumors, excessive snoring leading to sleep apnea, and significant weight loss.
Relative criteria involve frequent infections, requiring antibiotic use 4-5 times a year, suggesting potential benefits from tonsillectomy.
Adenoidectomy
Adenoids are located between the nose and throat and are composed of lymphoid tissue. During childhood, they come into initial contact with bacteria and viruses entering through the nose, producing antibodies for the body to fight against them. Enlarged adenoids in children can lead to various issues such as nasal congestion, snoring, loss of appetite, and ear-related problems.
In cases where adenoidectomy is necessary, a decision is made based on the size determined through imaging, and an endoscopic procedure may be preferred.
