Otoplasty

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty stands out as one of the most commonly performed aesthetic surgeries.

There are two main concerns that necessitate ear aesthetics. The first is when the ear has a wider angle than necessary, and the second is when the fold of the ear is not well-defined. While these issues may not pose a health risk, they can lead individuals to feel emotionally distressed, even causing them to withdraw from society. In both cases, surgical intervention ensures that the ear attains a standard structure. These surgeries, with no associated risks, result in individuals feeling better psychologically, experiencing increased self-confidence, and improved social interactions.

When Should Otoplasty be Performed?

One of the most significant factors contributing to the development of prominent ears is genetics. The two main causes are the insufficient formation of the ear's fold or the excessive development of the cartilage in the middle of the ear. The absence of the ear's fold (antihelix) and the overgrowth of the cartilage in the middle of the ear (concha) represent these two primary reasons. Typically, ear development is substantially completed between the ages of 4 and 5, but it can extend up to the age of 10. It is recommended to consider surgery for children identified with prominent ears within this age range.

How is Otoplasty Performed

Prominent ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is conducted under general or local anesthesia, considering the patient's preference. The average procedure duration is approximately 2 hours. Since the incision is made behind the ear, there is no visible scar after the surgery. A postoperative bandage should be worn for 5 days, and you can return to your daily activities after the stitches are removed on the 10th day. A protective bandage should be worn at night for 4-8 weeks. Avoidance of strenuous exercises is recommended for the first 3 months.
